Important: submitting an online complaint does not automatically mean that an FIR has been registered. Police action depends on the nature of the information and the applicable law. For information disclosing a cognizable offence, Section 173 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 governs registration and recording of information.

How to File an Online Complaint with Tamil Nadu Police

Open the official Tamil Nadu Police e-services portal. Use the official CCTNS citizen portal link above.
Select the online complaint service. Choose the option for registering an online complaint. Avoid third-party websites asking for police complaint details.

Online Complaint vs FIR: What Is the Difference?

Online Complaint A complaint submitted through the citizen portal places information before the police. It may be examined, enquired into or acted upon according to its contents and the applicable law.

FIR An FIR is the formal recording of information relating to a cognizable offence under the criminal-procedure law. A portal acknowledgement should therefore not be described as an FIR unless an FIR has actually been registered.

The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS) came into force on 1 July 2024, replacing the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 for the current criminal-procedure framework, subject to applicable saving and transitional provisions.

Section 173 BNSS deals with information relating to cognizable offences. Such information may be given orally or by electronic communication to the officer in charge of a police station.

Section 173 also provides for information to be given irrespective of the area where the offence was committed. This gives statutory recognition to the principle commonly referred to as a Zero FIR.

Where information is supplied electronically, the statutory requirements under Section 173 must be followed. Merely sending information online should therefore not be confused with completion of every legal step required for registration of an FIR.

Complaint status: keep the acknowledgement or reference number generated by the portal.

FIR status: where the official portal offers FIR status or case-related access, use the FIR number and other details requested by the system.

False Information and False Complaints

The older version of this page referred generally to prosecution under the Indian Penal Code. For offences committed after the commencement of the new criminal laws, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) is the principal penal code, while older matters may continue to be governed by the previous law depending on the date and applicable saving provisions.

Users should provide truthful and accurate information to the police. Knowingly giving false information or making a false accusation may attract legal consequences under the applicable provisions of the BNS or other laws, depending on the facts of the case.
