Nagpur Police Online Complaint: e-Complaint and FIR Guide

Use the official Nagpur City Police and Maharashtra Police citizen-service portals to submit an online complaint. This guide also explains when information about a cognizable offence is dealt with as an FIR under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.

Nagpur City Police provides an online complaint / e-Complaint route through the Maharashtra Police citizen-services portal. For emergencies or situations requiring immediate police assistance, use the emergency number 112 rather than relying only on an online submission.

Important: An online complaint and an FIR are not necessarily the same thing. Where the information discloses a cognizable offence, registration and handling of the information are governed by the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, including Section 173. The legal character of a submission depends on the facts and the applicable law, not merely on the name of the online form.

How to submit an online complaint to Nagpur City Police

1

Open the official Nagpur City Police website

Visit Nagpur City Police. Its citizen-services section provides a link for online complaints.

2

Go to the Maharashtra Police citizen portal

The Nagpur City Police online-complaint service links to the official Maharashtra Police - Services for Citizen (CCTNS) portal.

3

Select the relevant complaint or citizen service

Choose the available service appropriate to your issue. Follow the current portal prompts for registration, login, identification details and complaint information. Portal fields can change, so rely on the live official form rather than old screenshots.

4

Provide clear and accurate facts

Give the date, time, place, nature of the incident, persons involved (if known), contact details and any supporting information requested. Keep copies or screenshots of the acknowledgement/reference number generated by the portal.

5

Follow up when police action is required

If the matter is urgent, involves danger, or appears to disclose a cognizable offence requiring prompt police action, contact the jurisdictional police station or emergency service directly in addition to any online submission.

Latest law: FIR and cognizable offences under BNSS, 2023

BNSS replaced the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 for the new criminal-procedure framework from 1 July 2024.

Section 173 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 deals with information relating to cognizable offences. The provision allows such information to be given irrespective of the area where the offence was committed and contemplates information given orally or by electronic communication, subject to the statutory requirements.

Official text: India Code - Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.

Online complaint vs FIR: what is the difference?

An online complaint is a channel through which information or a grievance is submitted to police. Whether the information must be recorded and proceeded with as an FIR depends on whether it discloses a cognizable offence and on the applicable statutory procedure.

For non-cognizable matters, Section 174 BNSS deals with information regarding non-cognizable cases and investigation of such cases. For cognizable offences, Section 173 is the principal provision concerning the giving and recording of information.

Cybercrime and online financial fraud

For cybercrime complaints, use the Government of India's National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. For urgent cyber-financial fraud, the nationally publicised cybercrime helpline is 1930. Nagpur City Police also lists cybercrime services and emergency contacts on its official website.
