Current FIR Law: BNSS 2023 Section 173
The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS) has been in force from 1 July 2024 as India's current criminal-procedure code for new proceedings, subject to applicable saving and transitional provisions.
Section 173 BNSS governs information relating to cognizable offences. It provides that such information may be given orally or by electronic communication to the officer in charge of a police station and expressly recognises receipt of the information irrespective of the area where the offence was committed.
This statutory language supports the practice commonly known as a Zero FIR, where information about a cognizable offence can be received even if the offence occurred outside that police station's territorial jurisdiction, subject to transfer and further procedure according to law.
What the Official Sikkim Police FIR Page Shows
