Steps to search or view a Delhi Police motor vehicle theft FIR

1. Open the Delhi Police View FIR page or the motor vehicle theft portal.
2. Select M. V. Theft Cases (e-FIR) where shown. The general View FIR service also lists other categories, including FIRs from 1 July 2015 and property theft e-FIRs.
3. Choose the available Existing User or New User option, as applicable.
4. Log in or complete the required registration and verification process. The exact fields and authentication method may change.
5. Open the FIR viewing or search facility and enter the requested information, such as the FIR number, year, district, police station, mobile number or other reference details, depending on the screen.
6. Submit the search. If a record is available and you are authorised to view it, open the FIR and use the displayed download or print option.

Existing user login and new user registration

Option A: Existing user

Visit the existing user login page. Enter your registered email address or mobile number and the security or verification information requested by the portal. After authentication, select the appropriate FIR service. If the direct login page is unavailable, navigate through the official MV Theft e-FIR home page.

Option B: New user

Open the new user registration page, provide the details requested by Delhi Police and complete any verification steps. Sign in after registration and use the available FIR registration or viewing facility. Never share a password or one-time password with a third party.

Information needed to locate an FIR and obtain a copy

Keep the FIR number, registration year, district, police station, complainant details and vehicle registration number available. Vehicle chassis and engine numbers may also help when contacting the investigating officer. Portal fields differ across services, so a particular search may not require every item.

When the FIR appears, verify the number, police station, date and vehicle particulars before saving the document. Use the portal's download or print function, or the browser print function if permitted. An online copy may not be available for every FIR; sensitive cases can be withheld from public display. For an authenticated or certified record needed for legal or insurance purposes, contact the police station or relevant authority if the online document is insufficient.

Legal provisions applicable to motor vehicle theft FIRs

Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS): In force from 1 July 2024, subject to transitional provisions, the BNSS governs the recording and investigation of information about offences. The relevant provisions include:

• Section 173(1): Information about a cognizable offence may be given to the officer in charge of a police station irrespective of where the offence occurred (often called Zero FIR). It also provides for electronic communication, subject to the informant signing it within three days.
• Section 173(2): A copy of the information recorded under Section 173(1) must be provided forthwith, free of cost, to the informant or victim.

Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS): Section 303 defines theft and prescribes punishment, while Section 305 addresses theft in specified places or means of transport and may be relevant depending on the facts. The precise offences recorded in a vehicle theft FIR depend on the allegations and applicable law. The distinction between theft, robbery and other offences is fact-specific.

What to do if the vehicle theft FIR is missing online

First verify the FIR number, date, police station and any account details. Then contact the police station or investigating officer and request the appropriate FIR copy and status. An online search result does not by itself establish whether an investigation has been closed or a stolen vehicle recovered.
