How to Check Tamil Nadu Police FIR Status Online

Open the official Tamil Nadu Police e-services portal. Use the official link above.
Select the FIR status or case-status service. The portal provides citizen e-services relating to FIR, case and complaint information.
Enter the details requested by the portal. Depending on the current form, you may need the district, police station, FIR number, year, registration date or other identifying particulars.
Enter the security code or verification details. Complete any captcha or other verification step displayed by the official website.

Current Law: BNSS 2023 and FIR Registration

The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS) has been in force from 1 July 2024 as the current criminal-procedure framework for new proceedings, subject to applicable saving and transitional provisions.

Section 173 BNSS deals with information relating to cognizable offences. It permits such information to be given orally or by electronic communication to the officer in charge of a police station.

Section 173 also recognises receipt of information irrespective of the area where the offence was committed. This gives statutory recognition to the principle commonly referred to as a Zero FIR.

Checking an FIR's online status is different from lodging information with the police. The status portal helps citizens view information already recorded in the police system; it does not itself create or register a fresh FIR.

FIR Status, Case Status and Complaint Status

These terms should not be treated as interchangeable. Tamil Nadu Police CCTNS documentation states that citizens can view case or CSR status online through the Citizen Portal. A Community Service Register acknowledgement or online complaint is not automatically an FIR.

FIR Status Relates to a First Information Report that has been formally registered.

Case Status May show progress information recorded in the CCTNS system for a registered case.

CSR / Complaint Status Relates to a complaint, petition or Community Service Register acknowledgement and should not automatically be described as an FIR.

Online Complaint Information submitted through an online complaint facility. Police action depends on the facts and the applicable law.

If FIR Status Is Not Available Online

Check the entered details. A wrong FIR number, district, police station or year can prevent retrieval.

Try the main e-services portal. Individual service links may be moved or updated.

Contact the concerned police station. Some information may not be publicly available because of privacy, statutory restrictions, investigation status or technical reasons.
