Meghalaya Police e-FIR & Online Complaint

Meghalaya Police provides online citizen services through its official CCTNS Citizen Portal. Citizens can create an account, submit an e-FIR or online complaint, upload required documents and use available FIR-search services.

Important: An online complaint and a registered FIR are not necessarily the same thing. The police determine the appropriate legal action on the information submitted. For emergencies or an immediate threat to life or safety, contact the police/emergency service directly rather than relying only on an online submission.

Current law: BNSS Section 173

From 1 July 2024, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS) replaced the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 for the new criminal-procedure framework. Section 173 of the BNSS governs information relating to cognizable offences.

Key points under Section 173 BNSS: information about a cognizable offence may be given to the officer in charge of a police station irrespective of where the offence occurred; it may be given orally or by electronic communication. Where information is sent electronically, it is taken on record on being signed by the informant within three days. A copy of the information recorded under Section 173(1) is to be supplied free of cost to the informant or victim.

How to file an e-FIR or complaint online in Meghalaya

  1. Open the official CCTNS Citizen Portal Visit citizen.megpolice.gov.in.
  2. Create a citizen login or sign in New users can use the "Create citizen login" option. Existing users can sign in with their username, password and security code.
  3. Select the required service Choose e-FIR or Complaint, as applicable, from the services available in the portal.
  4. Select the complaint category Choose the category that best matches the incident or information you want to report.
  5. Fill in the application carefully Enter accurate contact details, incident details, place/date/time information and particulars of persons involved, if known.
  6. Upload required documents Attach supporting documents or other material requested by the portal. Do not upload altered, misleading or irrelevant material.
  7. Review and submit Check the information before submission and save the acknowledgement/reference generated by the portal for future tracking.
Practical tip: Keep a copy of your submission, acknowledgement number and uploaded documents. If the matter involves a cognizable offence and you face refusal to record the information, Section 173(4) BNSS provides a further statutory route by sending the substance of the information in writing and by post to the Superintendent of Police concerned.

Meghalaya Police also provides an FIR search facility. The official search page asks for details such as FIR number, police station and FIR date range. Availability of a downloadable copy depends on the data and access made available through the official system.
