Kolkata Police Missing Vehicle Search Online

Search for a missing or stolen vehicle, check traced vehicles and review unclaimed vehicles through the current official Kolkata Police vehicle-search services. This guide also explains the current theft law under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

Important: The vehicle-search database is an informational police service. If your vehicle has just been stolen, promptly report the offence to police rather than waiting for the vehicle to appear in an online search result.

How to search a missing or stolen vehicle online

Open the official missing vehicle search Visit the Kolkata Police "Show All Missing Vehicle" page.
Enter one or more identifying details The current search page provides fields including Engine Number, Chassis Number, Registration Number, vehicle type, model, colour and missing-from details.
Use the most reliable identifier available Registration number is usually the quickest starting point. If that does not produce a result, try the chassis number or engine number exactly as recorded in the RC or insurance documents.
Review the matching police record Results may show registration number, engine number, chassis number, case number, model, manufacturer, date of loss and other available police-record details.
Check the traced vehicle database separately If the vehicle is not visible in the missing list, also check the Kolkata Police traced-vehicle page for recovered vehicles.

What details should you keep ready?

  • Vehicle registration number
  • Engine number
  • Chassis / VIN number
  • Make and model
  • Vehicle colour
  • Date and place from which the vehicle went missing
  • RC and insurance policy details
  • FIR or complaint number, if already registered

Engine and chassis numbers should be entered carefully. Even a single incorrect character can prevent a matching record from appearing.

Current law for stolen vehicles: BNS 2023

For offences committed after the commencement of the new criminal laws on 1 July 2024, theft is principally governed by Section 303 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS). A motor vehicle is movable property and can therefore be the subject of theft.

Reporting a newly stolen vehicle

Searching the database is not a substitute for reporting a new theft. Information relating to a cognizable offence is governed procedurally by the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. If your vehicle has been stolen, contact the police promptly and provide the vehicle identifiers, ownership documents and complete facts of the incident.

If the incident occurred outside the territorial limits of the police station first approached, Section 173 BNSS permits information relating to a cognizable offence to be given irrespective of the area where the offence was committed, subject to the statutory procedure.

Frequently asked questions

Can I search a stolen vehicle by registration number?

Yes. The current Kolkata Police missing vehicle search includes a Registration Number field. It also allows searches using engine number, chassis number and other vehicle details.

Can I check whether Kolkata Police has recovered my vehicle?

Yes. Kolkata Police maintains a separate traced-vehicle search page. Check that database in addition to the missing-vehicle search.

What if I do not find my vehicle online?

Absence from the online database does not establish that no police record exists and does not remove the need to report a theft. Contact the investigating police station or Kolkata Police Motor Theft Section for case-specific information.

Why does an old record mention Section 379 IPC?

Historical offences were registered under the law applicable at that time. Since the new criminal laws came into force on 1 July 2024, current theft offences are principally dealt with under Section 303 BNS, while older records can continue to show IPC provisions.
