How to search a missing or stolen vehicle online
What details should you keep ready?
- Vehicle registration number
- Engine number
- Chassis / VIN number
- Make and model
- Vehicle colour
- Date and place from which the vehicle went missing
- RC and insurance policy details
- FIR or complaint number, if already registered
Engine and chassis numbers should be entered carefully. Even a single incorrect character can prevent a matching record from appearing.
Current law for stolen vehicles: BNS 2023
For offences committed after the commencement of the new criminal laws on 1 July 2024, theft is principally governed by Section 303 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS). A motor vehicle is movable property and can therefore be the subject of theft.
Reporting a newly stolen vehicle
Searching the database is not a substitute for reporting a new theft. Information relating to a cognizable offence is governed procedurally by the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. If your vehicle has been stolen, contact the police promptly and provide the vehicle identifiers, ownership documents and complete facts of the incident.
If the incident occurred outside the territorial limits of the police station first approached, Section 173 BNSS permits information relating to a cognizable offence to be given irrespective of the area where the offence was committed, subject to the statutory procedure.

Frequently asked questions
Can I search a stolen vehicle by registration number?
Yes. The current Kolkata Police missing vehicle search includes a Registration Number field. It also allows searches using engine number, chassis number and other vehicle details.
Can I check whether Kolkata Police has recovered my vehicle?
Yes. Kolkata Police maintains a separate traced-vehicle search page. Check that database in addition to the missing-vehicle search.
What if I do not find my vehicle online?
Absence from the online database does not establish that no police record exists and does not remove the need to report a theft. Contact the investigating police station or Kolkata Police Motor Theft Section for case-specific information.
Why does an old record mention Section 379 IPC?
Historical offences were registered under the law applicable at that time. Since the new criminal laws came into force on 1 July 2024, current theft offences are principally dealt with under Section 303 BNS, while older records can continue to show IPC provisions.
