Death registration and certification in Tamil Nadu are governed by the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, as amended by the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2023, together with the Tamil Nadu Registration of Births and Deaths Rules, 2025, notified on 31 July 2025.
How to Search and Download a Tamil Nadu Death Certificate
- Open the official Tamil Nadu CRS Death Certificate Search.
- Select or enter the required search information. The current CRS form includes gender, district, place of death and date of death. The portal also provides a separate link for Chennai.
- Choose whether the place of death was a hospital or home/other place. If hospital is selected, use the portal's hospital-selection facility.
- Enter the mobile number and complete the verification fields shown on the official search page.
- Submit the search. Review the matching registered record carefully before proceeding.
- Where the certificate is available, use the official portal facility to view or download the death certificate.
Details Commonly Needed for Search
The current Tamil Nadu CRS search interface requests information such as:
- gender of the deceased;
- district;
- place of death - hospital or home/others;
- hospital selection, where applicable;
- date of death;
- mobile number; and
- verification information shown on the portal.
Enter the particulars as closely as possible to the registered death record. A mismatch in district, date or place of death may prevent the correct record from appearing.
Which Death Certificates Are Available Online?
The Tamil Nadu CRS states that birth and death certificates can be downloaded for events registered from 1 January 2018. Its FAQ further states that certificates for events registered in CRS software may be downloaded anytime and any number of times free of cost.
Who Is Responsible for Reporting a Death?
For a death occurring in a hospital, health centre, maternity or nursing home or similar institution, the institution is responsible for reporting the event to the Registrar. Tamil Nadu CRS also states that institutional events cannot be reported in place of the institution by family members.
For a death occurring at home, the occurrence should be reported to the Registrar having jurisdiction over the place of death within 21 days.
Medical Certificate of Cause of Death
Where a deceased person was attended during the last illness by a medical practitioner, Section 10 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act provides for issue of a medical certificate of cause of death in the prescribed form. Tamil Nadu CRS guidance states that institutional deaths require the prescribed Medical Certificate of Cause of Death.
Certificate After Registration
Section 12 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, as amended with effect from 1 October 2023, requires the Registrar, after registration is completed and not later than seven days, to provide free of charge, electronically or otherwise, a certificate extracted from the register to the person who gave the information under the Act.
Delayed Death Registration
If a death was not reported within the normal period, Section 13 provides a statutory mechanism for delayed registration.
| Delay | Current statutory position |
|---|---|
| After the reporting period but within 30 days | The death may be registered on payment of the prescribed late fee. |
| After 30 days but within one year | Written permission of the District Registrar or other prescribed authority is required, along with the prescribed fee and a self-attested document in the prescribed form and manner. |
| After one year | Registration requires an order of the District Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, or an Executive Magistrate authorised by the District Magistrate having jurisdiction over the place where the death occurred, after verification and payment of the prescribed fee. |
Correction of a Death Certificate
Section 15 of the Act permits correction or cancellation of an entry where the legal requirements are satisfied. Tamil Nadu CRS states that the concerned Registrar alone is empowered to carry out a correction, subject to satisfaction regarding the supporting documents.
If the name, age, address or other registered particulars are incorrect, contact the Registrar responsible for the original death registration rather than attempting to alter a downloaded certificate.
