Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) registers deaths occurring within its municipal limits and provides online death-certificate services through its Virtual Civic Center and related civil-registration systems.

Use the current official service route. SMC's online-services area includes Death Certificate services such as search/enrolment and certificate access. If a particular record is not available through the legacy SMC search, use the current Gujarat civil-registration service or contact the relevant SMC zone office.

How to search a Surat death certificate online

Open the official SMC Online Services page. Choose the Death Certificate service from the available civic services.
Select Search & Enroll Death Certificate. The portal may allow a search using death details or a certificate number, depending on the record.
Enter the required information. Choose the language and provide the available registration particulars accurately.
Complete the captcha or security verification. Submit the search after entering the required verification details.
Review the result. If the death record is available, follow the portal instructions to enrol, view, print, verify or obtain the certificate.
Use the Gujarat registration system when necessary. If the record is not available through the SMC legacy search, check the current Gujarat civil-registration service or contact SMC.

Registration of death in Surat

SMC states that registration of births and deaths occurring within Surat Municipal Corporation limits is its statutory responsibility and that the activity is computerized. For routine registration, the information should be reported within the prescribed statutory period to the appropriate Registrar.

Jurisdiction matters: a death is registered at the place where the death occurred. If the death took place outside Surat Municipal Corporation limits, the certificate must ordinarily be obtained from the registration authority having jurisdiction over that place.

Current law on death registration

Death registration in India is governed by the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, as amended. The Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2023 came into force on 1 October 2023.

Under the presently operative Section 13, information given after the prescribed period but within thirty days may be registered on payment of the prescribed late fee. Delayed information given after thirty days but within one year requires written permission of the District Registrar or other prescribed authority, the prescribed fee and a self-attested document in the prescribed form and manner.

Where delayed information is given after one year, the presently operative law requires an order of the District Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Magistrate or an Executive Magistrate authorised by the District Magistrate, having jurisdiction over the area where the death occurred, after verification and payment of the prescribed fee.

2026 amendment: The Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2026 (Act No. 12 of 2026) was enacted on 6 August 2026. It proposes a new distinction between delays of more than one year but within two years and delays exceeding two years, with the latter requiring an order of a Judicial Magistrate of the first class. The Act itself states that it will come into force on a date separately notified by the Central Government. Until commencement is notified, rely on the presently operative Section 13 procedure.

Copies, correction and verification

SMC's Birth and Death Registration department states that additional certificate copies may be obtained through the prescribed process and that its computerized registration services are available through civic/zone offices. For correction of an entry, name-related issues or a record that cannot be located online, contact the competent SMC Registrar or zone office rather than creating a fresh registration.
