Birth Registration Time Limit and Delayed Registration
The normal reporting period for a birth is 21 days from the date of occurrence. Registration within the normal period is ordinarily without a registration fee. A birth that was not reported within 21 days can still be registered under the delayed-registration provisions of Section 13, subject to the prescribed procedure and fee.

Legal Importance of a Birth Certificate After 1 October 2023
For a person born on or after 1 October 2023, the amended Act provides that the statutory birth certificate may be used to prove the date and place of birth for specified purposes such as admission to an educational institution, issuance of a driving licence or passport, preparation of a voter list, marriage registration, Aadhaar issuance and certain government or public-sector appointments.
