How to Apply for a Marriage Certificate in Ahmedabad

  1. Register or log in.
    Create an account on the official AMC Marriage Registration Portal or sign in with your existing credentials.
  2. Fill the online application.
    Enter the bridegroom, bride, witness and jurisdiction/zone details requested by the portal.
  3. Upload the required documents.
    Upload scanned copies of the age proof, identity and address proof, marriage proof, photographs, priest details and witness documents as applicable.
  4. Wait for document scrutiny.
    The Sub-Registrar reviews the application and documents. Approved applications are forwarded for the Registrar's review.
  5. Book the physical-verification slot.
    After online approval, select the date and appropriate zone/ward office for in-person verification.
  6. Preview and print the memorandum.
    Download or preview the marriage memorandum and complete the affidavit/stamp-paper requirements shown by the portal.

Law Applicable to Marriage Registration in Gujarat

The principal State law for compulsory registration of marriages in Gujarat is the Gujarat Registration of Marriages Act, 2006. Section 4 requires marriages to be registered in accordance with the Act, while Section 5 provides for submission of a memorandum of marriage to the Registrar.

The Act separately deals with delayed submission of the marriage memorandum after thirty days, payment of fees, refusal of registration, appeals, maintenance and inspection of the marriage register, and penalties for non-compliance or false statements.

Important: Section 13 of the Gujarat Registration of Marriages Act, 2006 provides that failure to register a marriage does not by itself invalidate the marriage. Registration nevertheless remains a statutory requirement under the Act and is important for obtaining an official marriage-registration certificate.

Marriage Law and Minimum Age

The registration process does not override the substantive law governing the marriage. Depending on the parties and the form of marriage, the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, Special Marriage Act, 1954 or other applicable personal law may also apply.

The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 defines a child for this purpose as a male who has not completed 21 years of age and a female who has not completed 18 years of age. Applicants should ensure that all legal requirements applicable to their marriage are satisfied.

Carry the originals corresponding to the documents uploaded online. Ensure that names, dates, addresses and marriage particulars are consistent across the application and supporting documents. The portal may return an application for correction if the information or documents are incomplete or inconsistent.
