Tamil Nadu Birth Certificate Online Search & Download

Use the official Tamil Nadu Civil Registration System to search, view and download birth certificates for eligible registered events. This guide also explains pre-2018 records, search details and the current legal framework.

Official online availability: Tamil Nadu's Civil Registration System states that birth and death certificates can be downloaded from the CRS portal for events registered from 1 January 2018. For earlier records, the respective local body may need to be contacted.

The principal law governing registration is the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, as amended by the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2023. Tamil Nadu also notified the Tamil Nadu Registration of Births and Deaths Rules, 2025 on 31 July 2025.

Online certificates Events registered from 01.01.2018 are stated to be available through the Tamil Nadu CRS public portal.
Older records For events before 01.01.2018, contact the concerned local body if the record is not available online.
Download cost The CRS portal states that public download of available birth/death certificates is free of cost.
Hospital births For births occurring in hospitals and similar institutions, the institution is responsible for reporting the event to the Registrar.

How to Search and Download a Tamil Nadu Birth Certificate

  1. Open the official birth-certificate search page.
    Visit the Tamil Nadu Civil Registration System birth certificate search: CRS Birth Certificate Search.
  2. Search using the available details.
    The portal supports an RCH ID, or a combination of details such as gender, district, place of birth and date of birth.
  3. Enter a mobile number and request OTP.
    Provide the applicant's mobile number, request the OTP and enter it in the portal.
  4. Complete number verification.
    Enter the verification value displayed by the portal and submit the search.
  5. Select the correct registered birth record.
    The matching records may show details including registration number, child name, sex, date of birth, parents' names and registration date.
  6. View and download the certificate.
    Select the correct record and use the portal's certificate option to obtain the available birth certificate.
Chennai records: The Tamil Nadu CRS search page provides a separate official link for Chennai. Follow the "For Chennai" link shown on the CRS birth-certificate search page when applicable.

Birth Records Before 1 January 2018

The official Tamil Nadu CRS portal states that its public download facility covers registered events from 01.01.2018. For earlier events, citizens may have to approach the relevant local body. The CRS FAQ also notes that older events are being uploaded in phases, so it is sensible to check the official portal before making an offline request.
