Birth Registration Time Limits and Delayed Registration

Legal Importance of the Birth Certificate
Under the amended Registration of Births and Deaths Act, a birth certificate issued under the Act has an enhanced statutory role. For persons born on or after the commencement of the 2023 amendment, the certificate is to be used to prove the date and place of birth for specified purposes including admission to an educational institution, driving licence, voter list preparation, marriage registration, certain public appointments, passport and Aadhaar.

If Your Birth Record Is Not Found Online
An online search failure does not necessarily mean that no valid registration exists. Older records may not be fully digitised, records can be held under an earlier local registration unit, or the entered details may differ from the register.
First verify the spelling of names, year of registration, place of birth and registration unit. If the record still cannot be found, contact the Municipality, Municipal Corporation, Nagar Panchayat, Gram Panchayat or other local Registrar that registered the birth. For a birth that was never registered, use the delayed-registration procedure applicable to the age of the record.
