How to Apply for Tenant Verification Online
Use the official State Crime Records Bureau Citizen Portal.
Create a citizen account if required, or sign in with your existing credentials.
Choose the tenant-verification service shown in the Citizen Services menu.
Fill the current online form carefully. Ensure the name and address details match the supporting documents.
Upload only the photograph, identity proof, address proof or other documents specifically requested in the live form.
Retain the acknowledgement/reference number for tracking and future communication with the police.

How to Track Tenant Verification Status
After submission, preserve the acknowledgement or service-request number. The Citizen Portal is designed to allow registered users to follow the status of citizen-service requests. Log in and use the available status/service-request section rather than repeatedly submitting the same tenant details.
Current Legal Position: IPC 188 Is No Longer the Current Provision
The earlier version of this page stated that tenant verification was compulsory under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code. That statement is too broad and legally outdated.
For conduct occurring from 1 July 2024, the Indian Penal Code has been replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS). The present provision dealing with disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant is section 223 of the BNS.
Under section 223 BNS, where disobedience causes or tends to cause obstruction, annoyance or injury, the maximum punishment can extend to six months' simple imprisonment or a fine up to ₹2,500, or both. Where it causes or tends to cause danger to human life, health or safety, or a riot or affray, punishment can extend to one year or a fine up to ₹5,000, or both.
Tenant Data and Privacy
Tenant verification involves digital processing of personal information, including identity, address and contact data. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025 now form part of the national data-protection framework.
The final DPDP Rules were notified on 13 November 2025 with phased commencement. Some rules commenced on publication, while other provisions have later commencement dates. Users should therefore avoid unnecessary collection, sharing or retention of tenant documents and should submit personal information only through the official police system for the intended verification purpose.
Offline Tenant Verification
If the online service is unavailable, or if the concerned police station requires physical verification, contact the police station having jurisdiction over the rented premises. Take the documents requested by the station. An old PDF saved from an earlier version of a website should not be assumed to remain the current prescribed form.
