Under Section 66 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, a transport vehicle generally cannot be used in a public place except in accordance with the conditions of a permit granted or countersigned by the appropriate Transport Authority, subject to statutory exceptions.
Section 81 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 governs the duration and renewal of permits. A permit other than a temporary permit issued under Section 87 or a special permit issued under Section 88(8) is generally effective for five years from the date of issuance or renewal.
Which Vehicles Require a Permit?
Permit requirements primarily apply to transport vehicles. How to Renew a Vehicle Permit Online through VAHAN
- Open the official VAHAN Online Permit service. Go to VAHAN Online Permit.
- Choose the permit-related service. Use the option for permit services or renewal of permit available for the vehicle and jurisdiction.
- Enter vehicle information. Provide the vehicle registration number and the required chassis-number digits as requested on the portal.
- Complete authentication. Follow the current OTP, registered-mobile or other authentication process displayed by VAHAN.
- Select Renewal of Permit. Choose the renewal service applicable to the existing permit.
- Verify and complete application details. Check owner, vehicle, permit and insurance information and enter any additional information requested.
- Upload supporting documents. Upload documents through the document-management facility where the service requires or permits online upload.
