MCD Birth Certificate Online: Search, Verify & Download in Delhi

Birth certificate services for areas formerly administered by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) are now handled through the unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). This guide explains how to locate, verify and download a birth certificate through the current official MCD Birth & Death Registration portal.

Important: EDMC, North DMC and South DMC were unified into the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. For older records or certificates issued under the former corporations, use the current MCD portal and, where available, download the latest revised certificate.

Official MCD Birth & Death Registration Portal

MCD provides an online Registration of Birth & Death service for citizens. The portal supports certificate-related services, citizen login, birth/death verification and access to registration information.

How to Search and Download an MCD Birth Certificate

  1. Open the official MCD Birth & Death Registration portal. Use the citizen service or login option provided for birth and death registration.
  2. Sign in using the available citizen login method. If registration is required, complete the account/OTP process displayed by the MCD portal.
  3. Choose the birth certificate or Search/Print Certificate service. For legacy records, the portal may permit a search using the registration number or identifying birth details.
  4. Enter the requested information carefully. Depending on the search screen, this may include the registration number, date of birth, gender, father's name, mother's name, application number, mobile number or other verification details.
  5. Submit the search. If the matching record is available and the certificate has been issued, follow the on-screen option to view, generate, print or download the certificate.

Portal fields and workflow can change. Always follow the instructions shown on the current official MCD page rather than relying on an old EDMC screenshot or bookmarked EDMC URL.

Verify an MCD Birth Certificate Online

MCD also provides an online Birth/Death Registration Verification facility. The verification screen may request details such as the registration number, application number, date of birth, gender, parents' names, mobile number and captcha.

Former EDMC Birth Certificates and Older Records

The older EDMC-specific online links should no longer be treated as the primary route. MCD's current notice states that the former EDMC, North DMC and South DMC were unified. MCD has also taken steps to provide unique registration numbers and revised certificates for affected records.

If verification of an older certificate fails: search the current MCD system and download the latest issued certificate, if available. For very old records, availability depends on whether the legacy record has been digitised.

Current Law on Birth Registration and Birth Certificates

Birth and death registration in India is governed by the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, as amended by the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2023. The 2023 amendments came into force on 1 October 2023 and strengthened digital registration and electronic delivery of certificates.

Under the amended Section 12, after registration is completed the Registrar is required to provide the prescribed certificate to the informant electronically or otherwise, within the statutory framework. The amended law also gives birth certificates an expanded role as proof of date and place of birth for persons born on or after 1 October 2023 for specified public purposes.

Delayed Registration, Fees and Documents

MCD publishes its own current instructions, fee structure and document requirements on the official portal. The applicable process depends on how long after the birth the registration is requested. The portal currently distinguishes registrations within 21 days, delayed registrations after 21 days, registrations after one month and registrations after one year.

Situation What to do
Birth in a hospital/institution The institutional informant/hospital generally handles registration through the prescribed system.
Birth at home The citizen/informant should use the applicable MCD registration process for the area where the event occurred.
Delayed registration Additional permission, supporting documents, prescribed fee or an order of the competent authority may be required depending on the delay.
Name addition or correction Use the relevant MCD service and provide the supporting identity/change documents requested by the portal.
