The Maharashtra Traffic Police e-Challan system provides an online facility to check traffic violations and pay eligible challans. The official payment service is operated by the Additional Director General of Police (Traffic), Maharashtra State, Mumbai.
Current law governing Maharashtra traffic challans
Traffic offences and penalties are governed mainly by the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, as amended from time to time, together with the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Rules and applicable State Government notifications.
The Motor Vehicles Act also contains provisions relating to speeding, dangerous driving, driving without a licence, use of safety belts, helmet requirements, insurance, vehicle permits and other road-traffic obligations. Some matters are compoundable, while others may require court proceedings or further action depending on the offence and case status.
How to check Maharashtra Traffic Police eChallan online
- Open the official Maharashtra e-Challan Payment portal.
- Select the search option for Vehicle No. or Challan No..
- If searching by vehicle number, enter the vehicle registration number.
- Enter the last four digits of the chassis or engine number if requested by the portal.
- If searching by challan number, enter the challan number shown on the notice or SMS.
- Complete the CAPTCHA/security verification and submit the search.
- Review the challan details carefully, including the alleged offence, date, location and payable amount.
The official Highway Traffic Police FAQ also states that challan status can be checked through the Maharashtra portal and the Maha Traffic App. For Nashik City, the official FAQ directs users to the mParivahan app or the central Parivahan eChallan portal.
How to pay Maharashtra traffic fine online
- After locating the correct pending challan, select the challan you want to pay.
- Verify that the vehicle number, offence and amount are correct.
- Choose the available online payment option shown by the portal.
- Complete payment through the supported payment gateway.
- Wait for the portal to display the successful payment confirmation.
- Save or print the payment receipt and note the transaction/reference number.
The Maharashtra Highway Traffic Police currently states that online payment can be made using options such as net banking, UPI and debit/credit cards, subject to the payment methods made available on the gateway at the time of payment.
Receipt, payment status and duplicate payments
After a successful online transaction, keep the generated challan receipt and bank/payment reference. Do not immediately make a second payment merely because the status has not refreshed. First recheck the official portal and, where necessary, use the e-Challan grievance facility.
Wrongly booked challan or payment problem
The Maharashtra e-Challan system provides an official grievance facility for both challan-related disputes and payment/receipt issues.
- Open the official Maharashtra e-Challan Grievance page.
- Select whether your grievance relates to the challan or the receipt/payment.
- Enter the requested challan/receipt, vehicle and contact details.
- Explain the error clearly and provide the information requested by the portal.
- Submit the grievance and keep the reference details for follow-up.

Special note for Nashik City
The official Maharashtra Highway Traffic Police FAQ presently distinguishes Nashik City from the general Maharashtra portal. It directs Nashik City users to check through the mParivahan App or the official Parivahan eChallan service. If a Maharashtra portal search does not show a Nashik City challan, check the Parivahan service before concluding that no challan exists.
Can a traffic eChallan require court action?
Yes. Online payment is available only where the challan is eligible for such settlement/payment. Depending on the offence, enforcement status or court referral, the portal may not provide a normal online-payment option. Follow the status displayed on the official portal or instructions issued by the competent traffic police/court authority.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Entering the wrong vehicle registration number or chassis/engine digits.
- Paying a challan without checking whether the vehicle and offence details are correct.
- Using old bookmarked URLs containing temporary query strings instead of the stable payment page.
- Paying through unofficial links or third-party messages without verification.
- Making a duplicate payment before the first transaction status is reconciled.
- Ignoring a court-referred challan because an online "Pay" button is unavailable.
