Tamil Nadu motorists can use the national eChallan portal to search traffic or transport challans that are available in the system. The portal currently supports searches using a challan number, vehicle number or driving licence number. Once a challan is retrieved, its status, amount and payment options are displayed where applicable.
How to Check Tamil Nadu Traffic eChallan
- Open the official eChallan Parivahan portal.
- Choose Check Challan Status.
- Select the available search method: Challan Number, Vehicle Number or DL Number.
- Enter the requested details and the security/captcha information displayed by the portal.
- Select Get Detail to retrieve the available challan information.
- Check the challan number, issuing department, date, amount, status and vehicle or licence particulars before taking any further action.
How to Pay a Traffic Challan Online
- Retrieve the challan on the official eChallan portal.
- If the challan is eligible for online payment, select the payment option displayed against it.
- Complete the identity or mobile verification requested by the portal. The current system may use mobile, driving-licence or Aadhaar-based verification depending on the transaction flow.
- Choose an available payment method and complete the transaction through the authorised payment gateway.
- After successful payment, save or download the official receipt and transaction reference.
- Recheck the challan status after payment and keep the receipt until the challan is shown as disposed/paid.
Challan Sent to Court or Virtual Court
Some challans may be forwarded to a court or Virtual Court. The official eChallan system can display court-related status for such matters. Where the portal indicates that a challan can still be paid online, follow the displayed instructions carefully and avoid making duplicate payments through both eChallan and Virtual Courts.
If the challan requires adjudication rather than simple online payment, follow the court or Virtual Court process shown against the challan instead of assuming that every traffic case can be compounded online.
Current Traffic Fine Law
The principal legislation governing motor-vehicle offences and penalties is the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, as amended from time to time. Chapter XIII of the Act deals with offences, penalties and procedure.

Do not rely on a static fine chart unless it has been checked against the current law and the applicable State notification. The exact amount payable for a particular challan is the amount lawfully imposed and displayed for that offence or determined by the competent court.
Electronic Traffic Enforcement
Section 136A of the Motor Vehicles Act provides for electronic monitoring and enforcement of road safety. The eChallan platform is designed as an end-to-end digital traffic/transport enforcement system integrated with vehicle and driving-licence databases.
Traffic Offences Involving Criminal Proceedings
Ordinary traffic challans are primarily governed by the Motor Vehicles Act and applicable rules. Where conduct also constitutes a criminal offence-for example, in a serious road accident-the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 may also apply, and criminal procedure is governed by the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. Both new criminal-law codes came into force from 1 July 2024, subject to their statutory provisions and savings.
What to Do if the Challan Appears Incorrect
First verify the challan number, vehicle registration number, offence details, date, location, issuing department and available evidence shown on the official system. If the challan does not relate to your vehicle or appears factually incorrect, use the grievance or court remedy available for that challan instead of paying merely to close the alert.
Where a challan has already been paid but still appears pending, verify the transaction through the official payment-status tools and retain the bank/payment reference and eChallan receipt.
