Pay Taxes Online in India: GST, Income Tax, Professional Tax & Government Dues

Online tax payment in India now operates through different central and state portals depending on the levy. GST is generally paid through the GST common portal, Income Tax through the Income Tax Department's e-Pay Tax service, and Professional Tax or other state-specific dues through the relevant state tax or treasury system.

Which portal should you use?

GSTUse the official GST Portal to create a challan, make payment and track payment status.
Income TaxUse the Income Tax Department e-Pay Tax service for advance tax, self-assessment tax and other direct-tax payments.
Professional Tax & State DuesUse the portal notified by the relevant State Government, Commercial/State Tax Department or Treasury.
Important: Many older state VAT, entry tax, entertainment tax and commercial-tax payment systems relate to pre-GST or legacy liabilities. GST replaced numerous indirect taxes from 1 July 2017, but some state levies and taxes on specified non-GST goods may continue under separate laws. Always verify the current liability and payment head before remitting money.

How to pay GST online

Section 49 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 provides for deposits towards tax, interest, penalty, fee and other amounts through prescribed electronic modes to be credited to the electronic cash ledger. The GST Portal provides challan creation and payment tracking facilities.

  1. Open the official GST Portal and go to Services > Payments > Create Challan, or log in and use the payment services available in your account.
  2. Enter the applicable GSTIN or other required identification, select the reason for challan and fill the tax, interest, penalty, fee or other amount.
  3. Generate the challan and use an available payment mode shown by the portal.
  4. After payment, verify the transaction and retain the challan/payment reference for your records.

State-wise online tax payment guides

The following internal guides are retained for users looking for state-specific payment information. Because state portals, tax heads and procedures change, confirm the present payment route on the official state website before making any payment.

Before making an online tax payment

  • Confirm the tax type, assessment period, identification number and payment head.
  • Use only the official government payment portal or a payment gateway reached from that portal.
  • Check the amount carefully before authorising the transaction.
  • Save the challan, CIN/transaction reference and payment receipt.
  • If the account is debited but the portal does not show a successful transaction, check payment status before attempting a duplicate payment.

Where are Central Government non-tax receipts paid?

Where applicable, Central Government non-tax receipts can be paid through Bharatkosh, the Non-Tax Receipt Portal operated under the Controller General of Accounts.
