Important 2026 Update to the Profession Tax Schedule
GST, VAT and Commercial Tax: What Changed?
GST was introduced from 1 July 2017 and subsumed many earlier indirect taxes, including VAT for most goods, entertainment tax, luxury tax and entry tax. West Bengal GST is governed by the West Bengal Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, which has subsequently been amended, including by the West Bengal Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Act, 2026.
VAT and CST have not disappeared entirely from the Directorate's statutory responsibilities. The Directorate continues to administer the West Bengal Value Added Tax Act, 2003 and Central Sales Tax Act, 1956 for matters and commodities that remain within their scope. For GST payments and returns, taxpayers should use the GST system rather than an old general "commercial tax e-payment" workflow.
