Madhya Pradesh Tax Payment Online: GST, VAT, CST & Professional Tax

Use the correct official portal for the tax you need to pay. GST is generally paid through the GST Portal, while the Madhya Pradesh Commercial Tax Department continues to provide online services for Professional Tax and legacy VAT/CST matters.

Which portal should you use?

The earlier system of treating every state business-tax payment as "Commercial Tax" is no longer accurate. Since the introduction of GST, most indirect-tax payments on taxable supplies are made under the GST framework. Madhya Pradesh also continues to administer Professional Tax and legacy liabilities arising under earlier state tax laws.

Payment typeWhere to pay / manageTypical use
GSTGST PortalCGST, SGST, IGST, cess and GST liabilities through electronic ledgers/challans.
Professional Tax (PT)MP Commercial Tax DepartmentProfessional Tax registration, payment and related state services.
Legacy VAT / CSTMP VAT Web PortalOlder VAT/CST periods, arrears, returns, demands and other legacy matters where applicable.
Important: Do not use an old bookmarked MP Treasury "Cyber Treasury" payment page merely because it appears in an older guide. Start from the current official department or GST portal and follow the payment option shown there.

How to pay GST online in Madhya Pradesh

  1. Open the official GST Portal. Go to gst.gov.in and sign in with the GSTIN account where required.
  2. Check the liability. Verify the tax period, return/demand details and the amount payable before creating a challan.
  3. Create the challan/payment instruction. The GST system supports the payment modes made available on the portal, such as e-payment and other permitted banking modes.
  4. Complete payment through the selected bank/payment channel. Confirm that the payment is credited and reflected on the GST Portal.
  5. Save the challan and receipt details. Keep the CPIN/CIN or other transaction acknowledgement with your tax records.

How to pay Madhya Pradesh Professional Tax or legacy VAT/CST dues

  1. Open the Madhya Pradesh Commercial Tax Department portal.
  2. Select the relevant registration/login or tax-payment service. The portal presently provides PT registration options and tax-payment services, along with legacy VAT/CST functions.
  3. Choose the correct tax type and period. For old liabilities, confirm whether the demand relates to VAT, CST, Entry Tax, Luxury Tax, Professional Tax or another legacy head.
  4. Enter the taxpayer/dealer details, payment purpose and amount exactly as shown in the relevant demand, return or departmental record.
  5. Complete payment through the available banking/payment option and download or print the acknowledgement/receipt.
Record-keeping tip: Preserve the challan, bank reference, portal receipt and the relevant return/demand order together. This is particularly important for legacy tax periods where reconciliation may be required later.

Applicable legal framework

For current GST transactions in Madhya Pradesh, the principal state law is the Madhya Pradesh Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 read with the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, the Integrated Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 and the applicable rules, notifications and circulars.

Older VAT/CST liabilities and proceedings may still continue under the relevant saving provisions and legacy enactments for periods before GST or for transactions that remain outside GST. The MP Commercial Tax Department portal continues to publish VAT, CST, Professional Tax and other legacy Acts, Rules, schedules and departmental services.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still pay Madhya Pradesh Commercial Tax through the old Treasury link?

Use the current MP Commercial Tax Department portal or the GST Portal instead of relying on an old direct Treasury URL. The appropriate payment route depends on the tax and period involved.

Where should a GST-registered business pay SGST in Madhya Pradesh?

GST liabilities, including the Madhya Pradesh SGST component, are ordinarily discharged through the GST Portal using the electronic cash/credit ledger mechanism applicable to the return, demand or other GST liability.

Is Professional Tax still separate from GST?

Yes. Professional Tax is a separate state levy and is not replaced by GST. Madhya Pradesh continues to provide Professional Tax registration and related services through its Commercial Tax Department portal.
