Parking laws applicable to traffic challans

Parking and obstruction offences are principally governed by the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, applicable State rules, traffic-control orders, road signs and local enforcement directions.

ProvisionRelevance to parking
Section 117Provides for parking places and halting stations.
Section 119Requires compliance with mandatory traffic signs and driving regulations.
Section 122Prohibits leaving a vehicle in a dangerous position or in circumstances causing or likely to cause danger, obstruction or undue inconvenience.
Section 127Deals with removal of vehicles abandoned, left unattended or improperly parked in specified circumstances.
Section 177 / 177AProvide general penalties and penalties for contravention of regulations where applicable.
Section 201Provides a penalty for keeping a vehicle on a public place so as to impede the free flow of traffic; removal charges may also be recoverable where applicable.

The exact offence and fine depend on the facts, location, traffic sign, applicable notification and the provision recorded in the official challan. For that reason, this page does not use a fixed generic "parking fine" amount.

Common parking violations enforced in Bengaluru

Bengaluru Traffic Police enforcement records separately identify categories such as:

  • Wrong parking
  • Footpath parking
  • Parking at intersections
  • Parking at BMTC bus stops

Other parking conduct may also attract action where a vehicle blocks traffic, violates a traffic sign, creates danger or is parked in a prohibited area.

Payment debited but challan still pending?

The official eChallan portal provides a Check Pending Transaction facility. If money has been debited but payment status has not updated, verify the transaction there before attempting another payment.

If the issue remains unresolved, use the grievance or contact facility on the official eChallan portal.

Can a wrongly issued parking challan be disputed?

If the vehicle, place, date, offence or other particulars appear incorrect, review the evidence available with the challan and use the official grievance or issuing-authority procedure. Do not pay an unknown third party to "cancel" or "settle" a challan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check a parking challan by vehicle number?

Use the official eChallan portal and enter one of the identifiers supported by its current challan-status page, which may include vehicle or challan details.

Is "wrong parking" the same as obstruction?

Not necessarily. A challan may be issued under different provisions depending on the parking location and conduct. Section 122 addresses dangerous or obstructive positioning, while Section 201 specifically addresses obstruction to the free flow of traffic.

Can a vehicle be removed or towed?

The Motor Vehicles Act contains provisions dealing with removal of certain vehicles and recovery of removal charges. Whether towing/removal is authorised in a particular case depends on the applicable statutory conditions and local enforcement framework.

Should I use the old "Parking Violation Fine Against Tag" screenshots?

No. Government portals change over time. Use the current official eChallan or Karnataka One interface and follow the instructions displayed there.
