What is a Tatkaal Passport?

Tatkaal is the expedited passport service offered by the Ministry of External Affairs for eligible fresh-passport and re-issue applicants. It is intended to provide faster processing, but the Passport Office remains the final authority on whether an application can be processed under the Tatkaal scheme.

Latest Tatkaal Passport Fee in 2026

Passport application fees were revised with effect from 1 July 2026. The current Passport Seva fee structure shows an additional Tatkaal fee of ₹2,500, payable over and above the basic application fee applicable to the passport service selected.

Documents Required for Tatkaal Passport

The exact documents depend on whether the application is fresh or re-issue, the applicant's age, address, Non-ECR status and other circumstances. Passport Seva advises Tatkaal applicants to submit the normal supporting documents applicable to the case plus additional Tatkaal documents.

Additional Tatkaal identity documents

Current Passport Seva guidance provides a prescribed list of acceptable supporting documents. Adults are generally required to produce the prescribed number of documents from that list, while separate requirements apply to minors. Examples include Aadhaar/e-Aadhaar, EPIC, PAN, a valid driving licence, an eligible bank/post-office passbook, student photo ID, birth certificate, government/service photo ID, pension documents and the previous passport in re-issue cases.

Do not rely on a generic document list alone. Use Passport Seva's current Document Advisor for your exact application because requirements vary by case and can be amended.

Tatkaal Undertaking and Eligibility

Applicants under Tatkaal should check the current eligibility rules before applying and complete the prescribed Tatkaal undertaking for submission at the Passport Office. Some categories are not eligible for Tatkaal processing, and the exclusion list can change.

Examples of currently restricted categories include certain major changes in personal particulars, some citizenship cases, specified minor cases, certain applicants with criminal-court related issues, adverse police reports and other special situations. Always check the official "Categories not under Tatkaal Scheme" notice before booking.

Police Verification for Tatkaal Passport

Police verification is ordinarily carried out on a post-police-verification basis in Tatkaal cases, meaning that the passport may be issued before the verification report is received. The applicable police-verification mode depends on the applicant's facts and Passport Office decision.

Passport Seva currently states that where post-police verification applies, dispatch is generally on the third working day excluding the date of submission. In eligible "No Police Verification" Tatkaal cases, dispatch can be within one working day excluding the date of submission.

Tatkaal Appointment and Online Payment

Online payment is mandatory for booking appointments. Passport Seva currently accepts Credit/Debit Cards including MasterCard, Visa and RuPay, Internet Banking, UPI and SBI Wallet. Tatkaal applicants must pay the entire applicable Tatkaal-category fee while making the online payment.

Tatkaal appointment opening times vary by Passport Office. Applicants should check current appointment availability on the official portal. Passport Seva also states that Tatkaal appointments can normally be rescheduled only once.

Important Safety Note

Use only the official Passport Seva website or the official Passport Seva mobile app. The Ministry of External Affairs has warned applicants about fraudulent passport-related websites and apps that collect personal information or charge unnecessary fees.
