Apply for an Indian Passport Through Passport Seva
Indian citizens can apply for a fresh passport or re-issue of an existing passport through the Ministry of External Affairs' official Passport Seva portal. The online process allows you to register, complete the application, pay the applicable fee and schedule an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK).

Steps to Apply for a Fresh or Re-issued Passport Online
- Register on Passport Seva. Open the official portal, choose Register, enter the required details and confirm your registered email address.
- Log in to your account. Use your registered login credentials. Passport Seva currently states that the account password expires periodically and may need to be reset.
- Select the service. From the dashboard, open Services and choose Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport.
- Choose the appropriate Regional Passport Office (RPO). Follow the portal's current RPO/PSK selection instructions based on your residence and preferred service location.
- Complete the online application. Fill applicant, family, address, emergency contact, previous passport (where applicable) and other required details. Review the passport preview and verify all particulars carefully.
- Submit the application. After submission, an Application Reference Number (ARN) is generated. Check all entries before final submission because correction options may be restricted afterward.
- Pay and schedule the appointment. Use Pay and Schedule Appointment, choose the applicable Normal or Tatkaal quota, select a PSK/POPSK and complete payment.
- Attend the PSK/POPSK appointment. Carry the required original documents and self-attested photocopies. Follow the appointment instructions sent by Passport Seva.
Passport Fees Effective from 1 July 2026
The following amounts are shown on the official Passport Seva fee structure. Fees can change, so verify them on the official portal before paying.

Passport Seva also lists separate higher fees for replacement of lost, damaged or stolen passports and for certain changes in particulars. A 10% rebate on the basic fresh-passport fee is shown for eligible minor applicants aged 8 or below and senior citizens above 60.
Accepted Online Payment Methods
Online payment is mandatory for booking Passport Seva appointments. Current Passport Seva information lists:

- Internet banking through SBI and other supported banks

Documents Required for Passport Application
The exact documents depend on whether the application is fresh or re-issue, the applicant's age, address, employment category, Non-ECR eligibility, Tatkaal status and the reason for re-issue. Passport Seva advises applicants to produce original documents with one set of self-attested photocopies at the PSK.

Appointment, Rescheduling and Visit to PSK/POPSK
After successful online payment, select an available appointment. The official portal displays appointment availability for the chosen PSK/POPSK. Passport Seva's current FAQ states that a confirmed ordinary passport appointment may generally be rescheduled only a limited number of times; Tatkaal has stricter rescheduling limits.
Applicants should reach the selected centre according to the appointment instructions and carry all applicable original supporting documents. For a minor below four years, Passport Seva currently asks applicants to carry a recent colour photograph measuring 4.5 cm X 3.5 cm with a white background.
Fresh Passport vs Re-issue of Passport
Choose Fresh Passport when you have never held an Indian passport. Choose Re-issue if you already hold or previously held a passport and need a new booklet because of expiry, exhaustion of pages, loss, damage, change in personal particulars or another permitted reason.
Do not apply as a fresh applicant merely because an earlier passport has expired. Select the service that correctly reflects your passport history.
Police Verification
Police verification requirements depend on the type of application and the applicant's circumstances. It may take place before or after passport issuance depending on the applicable category and Passport Authority's processing rules. Tatkaal Passport
Tatkaal is an expedited passport service for eligible applicants. The current Passport Seva fee structure adds a Tatkaal fee to the normal application fee.
