How to Check a Kolkata Traffic Challan Online
For Kolkata and other West Bengal traffic challans available in the national eChallan system, open the official Parivahan eChallan portal. The service provides challan-search options using challan number, vehicle number or driving licence number.

What If the Payment Is Pending or Failed?
If money has been debited but the challan still appears unpaid, do not immediately pay again. First use the pending-transaction/payment-verification facility on the official eChallan portal. Keep the challan number, vehicle number and transaction details ready.
The eChallan portal currently lists its technical helpdesk as 0120-4925505 (6:00 AM to 10:00 PM) and helpdesk-echallan[at]gov[dot]in. Contact details can change, so confirm them on the official portal before relying on them.
2026 Legal Update: Electronic Traffic Challans
Traffic enforcement continues to operate under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, as amended.
The Central Motor Vehicles (Third Amendment) Rules, 2026 substituted Rule 167. The amended rule provides for challans to be issued through the system in physical or electronic form by an authorised officer, and permits a State Government to enable auto-generation of challans through electronic monitoring and enforcement systems.
For the official notification and current legal text, refer to the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways and the official Gazette/notifications published by the Government of India.
Fraud & OTP Safety
The official eChallan service warns users about fraudulent websites and mobile apps impersonating eChallan services. Do not disclose passwords, OTPs or payment credentials in response to unsolicited calls, emails, messages or links. Verify that the address is an official government domain before paying.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I search a Kolkata challan using only my vehicle number?
Yes. The official eChallan service provides a vehicle-number search option. It also provides options based on challan number and driving licence number.
Is the old Kolkata Traffic Police payment website still necessary?
For current online fine payment, West Bengal Traffic Police directs users to the national NextGen eChallan portal. This page therefore uses the Government of India eChallan service as the primary payment route.
What should I check before paying?
Verify the challan number, vehicle registration, issuing authority, offence details and payable amount. If anything appears incorrect, use the grievance/contact facilities provided by the competent traffic authority instead of paying through an unofficial intermediary.
Should I save the payment receipt?
Yes. Save or print the receipt/acknowledgement and transaction number until the challan status is shown as paid and no further action is required.
