What is an IFSC code? The Indian Financial System Code (IFSC) is an 11-character alphanumeric code used to identify a bank branch participating in electronic payment systems such as NEFT. The first four characters identify the bank, the fifth character is zero, and the final six characters identify the branch.

How to verify an SBI IFSC before transferring money

Check the IFSC supplied by the beneficiary against an official source. SBI provides a branch locator, while the Reserve Bank of India publishes information and lists for branches participating in NEFT and RTGS. The IFSC is also commonly printed on bank-issued cheque leaves and may appear in account records.

Do not rely on an IFSC alone when sending funds. Carefully verify the beneficiary name and, especially, the account number entered in the payment instruction. RBI guidance places responsibility on the remitter for correct payment inputs, and electronic credit processing can rely on the account number.

IFSC, NEFT, RTGS and MICR - quick meaning

IFSC

IFSC stands for Indian Financial System Code. It identifies the participating bank branch for routing electronic payment messages.

NEFT

NEFT stands for National Electronic Funds Transfer. It is a nationwide centralized payment system owned and operated by the Reserve Bank of India.

RTGS

RTGS stands for Real Time Gross Settlement. It settles eligible transfers individually in real time rather than through deferred net settlement.

MICR

MICR means Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. MICR codes are associated with cheque processing and should not be confused with an IFSC.

Accuracy note: This is an informational directory page. Bank branches can be renamed, merged, relocated, closed or assigned updated operational details. Always verify the current IFSC and beneficiary account particulars through SBI, RBI or the beneficiary bank before making a transaction.
