PNR Status Online: Check Indian Railways Reservation Status and PNR Codes
Updated: 3 September 2026Indian Railways passengers can check the current reservation status of a booked ticket by entering the 10-digit PNR number in the official Passenger Reservation Enquiry system. The result shows booking status, current status, train and journey information, charting status and other reservation details.
What is PNR Status?
PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. It is the reservation record associated with a booked railway journey. Indian Railways uses a 10-digit PNR number to identify the reservation and display the booking and current status of passengers covered by that record.
The PNR number is printed on the railway ticket. The official Indian Railways PNR enquiry service states that it can be found on the top-left portion of the ticket. For an e-ticket, the PNR is also shown in the booking details.
How to Check PNR Status Online
- Open the official Indian Railways Passenger Reservation Enquiry page.
- Locate the Passenger Current Status Enquiry section.
- Enter the 10-digit PNR number printed on your ticket.
- Submit the enquiry to view the booking status and current status.
- Check the train number, train name, boarding date, origin, destination, boarding point, class, charting status and passenger-wise reservation information displayed on the result page.
The current-status column is important because a passenger's status can change after booking as cancellations, quota movements and chart preparation take place.
How to Check PNR Status Through 139 or SMS
Indian Railways operates the integrated enquiry number 139. Reservation-related enquiries, including PNR status, can be accessed through the 139 enquiry system.
The official Railway information for SMS enquiry gives the PNR format as:
Example: PNR 4341089635
Send to: 139
SMS charges and service conditions may depend on the applicable Railway/telecom service. The older numbers 5888, 57886 and 5676747 previously mentioned on this page have not been retained because the current official Railway material identifies 139 as the integrated enquiry service.
Meaning of PNR Status Codes
Indian Railways publishes the following legends on its official PNR enquiry page. Understanding these abbreviations helps passengers interpret the reservation result correctly.

Can PNR Status Change Before the Journey?
Yes. Indian Railways expressly cautions that where the final reservation charts have not yet been prepared, the current status may upgrade or downgrade later. A wait-listed or RAC ticket may therefore change before final charting, depending on cancellations, quota movement and other reservation factors.
Passengers should recheck the PNR status closer to departure and after chart preparation rather than relying only on the status visible immediately after booking.
PNR Prediction and Official Status
The Indian Railways PNR enquiry system may display prediction information based on current and past trends. Indian Railways states that such prediction is indicative and may differ from the final reservation position. Passengers should therefore rely on the official current PNR status and final charting status rather than treating any prediction as a guarantee of confirmation.
Railway Assistance and Complaints
For railway assistance, grievances or journey-related complaints, passengers can use the official RailMadad platform. The integrated Railway helpline number displayed by RailMadad is 139.
