A missing registration certificate, lost keys or misplaced documents alone should not be falsely reported as vehicle theft. If force, threats, robbery, a known suspect or another serious circumstance is involved, contact the nearest police station or emergency service rather than assuming the simplified e-FIR form is appropriate.

How to register a vehicle theft FIR online in Delhi

1. Open the official website. Go to Delhi Police and choose MV Theft E FIR under Citizen Services. The original dedicated service address is MV Theft e-FIR portal; if this deep link changes, use the main Delhi Police website.
2. Select the user option. Existing users can use the existing-user login; new users can use the new-user registration, if these pages remain available.
3. Register or sign in. Supply the requested mobile number, email address and identity details, complete any verification or security challenge and follow the instructions displayed on the current portal.
4. Describe the theft accurately. Enter the vehicle particulars, place and approximate time of theft, date and circumstances of discovery, and complainant contact information. Avoid speculation presented as fact.
5. Review and submit. Check all entries and submit the report, complete any declaration and required verification, and preserve the acknowledgement or FIR reference shown.
6. Confirm FIR registration. Where the portal generates an FIR, download or save its copy. If only an acknowledgement appears, follow up through the portal or police station to confirm whether an FIR has been registered.

Information to keep ready before filing

• Registration number, vehicle type, make, model, colour and identifying features.
• Engine number and chassis number, if available from the registration certificate or insurance papers.
• Registered owner's name, address and contact details.
• Date, time or estimated period of theft and the precise location where the vehicle was last parked or seen.
• Insurance policy, registration certificate, identity proof and supporting records, if requested by the portal or investigating officer.
• Any CCTV location, GPS or FASTag information, witness details or other relevant evidence.

Applicable legal provisions in India

Section 173 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS)

Section 173(1) governs information about cognizable offences. Such information may be given to the officer in charge of a police station irrespective of territorial area, including through electronic communication. Under Section 173(1)(ii), electronically communicated information is taken on record upon the informant signing it within three days. The exact signature and verification process for an e-FIR must follow the applicable police rules and service workflow.

Section 173(2) provides for a copy of the recorded information to be given forthwith, free of cost, to the informant or victim. Section 303 defines theft in general terms as dishonestly moving movable property out of another person's possession without consent, with the intention of taking it.
