Section 30 - Savings under the Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act, 1956
Section 30 is the savings provision of the Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act, 1956. It protects the legal treatment of an adoption made before the Act commenced and prevents the 1956 Act from retrospectively changing the validity or effect of that earlier adoption.

30. Savings. Nothing contained in this Act shall affect any adoption made before the commencement of this Act, and the validity and effect of any such adoption shall be determined as if this Act had not been passed.
Meaning and effect of Section 30
The provision is a transitional safeguard. Where an adoption was made before the commencement of the Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act, 1956, the Act does not retrospectively determine whether that adoption was valid or what legal consequences followed from it. Those questions are to be decided under the law that would have applied if the 1956 Act had not been enacted.
In practical terms, Section 30 separates pre-Act adoptions from adoptions governed by the statutory requirements introduced by the 1956 Act. A pre-commencement adoption is therefore not invalid merely because it does not satisfy a requirement that the Act introduced for later adoptions.
