What Is an Australian Visitor Visa?

The Visitor visa subclass 600 is a temporary visa for people who want to visit Australia for an eligible visitor purpose. It can be granted as a single-entry or multiple-entry visa, and the stay period depends on the stream and the individual circumstances.

A Visitor visa does not provide general work rights. The activities permitted depend on the stream and the conditions stated in the visa grant notice.

Tourist Stream - Apply Outside Australia

The Tourist stream is for people who want to travel to Australia for a holiday, cruise, to visit family or friends, or for another visitor purpose that is not business or medical treatment.

You must have enough money to support yourself during the visit and genuinely intend to stay temporarily and comply with all visa conditions.

Business Visitor Stream

The Business Visitor stream is for genuine short-term business visitor activities. It does not permit ordinary employment or providing services to an Australian business.

Permitted business visitor activities

• making general business or employment enquiries;
• investigating, negotiating, entering into or reviewing a business contract;
• undertaking activities as part of an official government visit;
• participating in a conference, trade fair or seminar where the organiser does not pay you to participate; and
• undertaking tourist activities during the visit.

Activities not permitted

• working for or providing services to an Australian business or organisation; and
• selling goods or services directly to the public.

Home Affairs generally grants a stay of 3 months under this stream, although a stay of up to 12 months may be granted in some circumstances. The applicant must be outside Australia when applying and when the application is decided.

General Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility depends on the selected stream, but applicants generally need to satisfy requirements including:

• holding a valid passport or eligible travel document;
• being a genuine temporary visitor;
• having enough money, or access to enough money, for the stay;
• meeting health requirements;
• meeting character requirements;
• having paid, or arranged to pay, debts owed to the Australian Government;
• meeting the stream-specific purpose requirements; and
• complying with the best-interests-of-the-child requirement for applicants under 18.

Supporting Documents for Tourist and Business Visitor Visas

Identity and travel documents

• passport personal-details page;
• evidence of any change of name;
• travel itinerary or proposed dates;
• details of the purpose of the trip; and
• previous travel history where relevant.

Financial documents

• recent bank statements;
• payslips or evidence of employment;
• tax or business documents where appropriate;
• evidence of accommodation or sponsorship; and
• other evidence showing sufficient funds for the visit.

Evidence of reasons to return home

Applicants should provide evidence relevant to their circumstances, such as employment, business interests, studies, family responsibilities, property, financial commitments or other ties demonstrating a genuine temporary visit.

Business Visitor documents

• invitation letter from the Australian organisation;
• conference, seminar or trade-fair registration;
• details of meetings or business appointments;
• employer letter explaining the purpose and duration of travel;
• evidence relating to contract negotiations or business enquiries; and
• proof that the proposed activity falls within permitted business visitor activities.

Children under 18

Where parental consent is required for a child under 18, Home Affairs may require consent documentation including Form 1229.

Health Insurance and Healthcare Costs

Visitors are generally responsible for their healthcare costs in Australia. Home Affairs strongly recommends adequate health insurance for unexpected medical treatment. Some passport holders may have limited access to Medicare under a reciprocal healthcare agreement.

In some circumstances, a Visitor visa may be granted subject to Condition 8501 - Maintain adequate health insurance.

Visitor Visa Subclass 600 Cost

As at 1 September 2026, Home Affairs lists the Tourist stream for applicants outside Australia and the Business Visitor stream at from AUD 250, subject to limited concessions and any additional charges that may apply.

From 1 July 2026, lower visa charges apply in specified circumstances to eligible citizens of listed Pacific Island countries and Timor-Leste.

2. Check the current eligibility requirements for your passport and purpose of travel.

The Australian visa is digitally linked to the passport. The visa grant letter specifies the entry facility, stay period and conditions. Use VEVO to check current visa details and conditions.

A multiple-entry visa allows travel to and from Australia while the visa is valid, subject to the authorised stay period. A single-entry visa normally requires a new visa before returning after departure.
