Current legal position: Aadhaar enrolment and update are governed by the Aadhaar Act, 2016 and the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, 2016, as amended. UIDAI's 2026 amendment substituted the current Schedule II list of acceptable documents with effect from 7 May 2026.
How to change the address in Aadhaar
UIDAI permits an Aadhaar number holder to request an address update online where the service is available and the registered mobile number can receive OTP, or by visiting an Aadhaar Enrolment/Update Centre. The address entered in the request must be supported by the applicable UIDAI document or verification route.
UIDAI Standard Certificate for address proof
A certificate issued in the UIDAI Standard Certificate format by an officer or authority permitted in UIDAI's current acceptable-document list can be used as Proof of Address when the applicable conditions are satisfied. Do not use an old certificate template merely because it was accepted in the past; always check the current UIDAI list before submitting the request.
Important: The old description "certificate signed by any Gazetted Officer or family head" is too broad for the current process. A Head of Family (HoF) update is a separate UIDAI route and is subject to the prescribed relationship, consent/authentication and document requirements.
Head of Family (HoF) address update
Under the current regulations, the HoF route may be used for an address update where the applicant satisfies UIDAI's prescribed relationship and verification requirements. For an HoF-based address update, the HoF must be at least 18 years old and may be the applicant's mother, father, legal guardian, spouse, child/ward or sibling, subject to UIDAI's applicable requirements.
- Check whether you have a valid Proof of Address document in your own name. If yes, the document-based update route is generally the simpler option.
- If using the HoF route, ensure that the relationship and HoF requirements in the current UIDAI rules are satisfied.
- Use the current form/process shown on UIDAI or myAadhaar rather than an archived or unofficial form.
- Enter the address carefully and ensure that the supporting document is valid on the date of application.
- Retain the acknowledgement or Service Request Number for status tracking.
Common documents used for Aadhaar address update
The exact admissibility of a document depends on the current UIDAI list. The following are common examples shown in UIDAI's current guidance; always verify the latest document list before applying.

Basic document checks before submitting
- Proof of Identity should contain the applicant's name and photograph where required.
- Proof of Address should contain the applicant's name and address in India where required.
- Use a valid and current document unless UIDAI expressly permits otherwise.
- The information entered in the update request should match the supporting document.
- For HoF-based updates, use only the relationship and verification route permitted by the current UIDAI rules.
Online address update
For an online request, visit the official myAadhaar portal and sign in using Aadhaar and the OTP sent to the registered mobile number. Select the available address-update service, enter the new address, upload the required supporting document and complete the request as instructed on the portal.
Address update at an Aadhaar centre
You may also visit an Aadhaar Enrolment/Update Centre. Carry the original supporting documents required for your chosen update route. Under the current regulations, originals presented at a centre are electronically copied and verified and are to be returned after verification.
